Coaches love to coach… but do all athletes love to be coached?
As I coach there are a few things I have noticed about athletes that listen, internalize, and apply feedback and coaching most effectively.
Here are 7 WAYS TO MAKE YOURSELF MORE COACHABLE:
Be 10 Minutes Early:
Punctuality is a simple way to express your level of commitment to yourself and your coach.
Being early to your training session or class will allow you to get in the right mental state, prepare equipment, and review what you will be doing for your training session.
Talk to your Coach:
Your Coach is eager to help. Learn to have a 2-way relationship. Maybe you have an injury, maybe you are nervous or unsure on how to modify or scale your workout, talk to your coach! You are not bugging them!
You have made a decision to be at a gym where the most valuable thing we have to offer is COACHING. Listen, trust, and apply what your coach suggests.
Listen to the instructions and explanations for the workout so time can be used most efficiently.
Participate in ALL of it:
Participate in the warm up and NEVER think you are too advanced to participate in movement progressions and cool down.
Seek 1 on 1 time:
Sometimes the improvement you seek will require more time and attention. One on one time with a coach is EXTREMELY valuable, seek it out and consider it an investment in yourself.
Keep a training log:
Your training should not be random. Track times, weights, PRs, and your thoughts and feelings during your training sessions.
Do not be afraid to ask questions about your particular circumstances. This goes back to developing a great relationship with your coach.
Class size, distractions, time, injury, distance can be factors that challenge both athlete and coach but as you apply the 7 steps listed above both you and your coach will be able to help you ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS.
At RxFIT we want you to know WHAT to do and HOW to do it in the best way possible for YOU.
